In 2025 the ALCDSB launched the Pastoral themes which will guide our Catholic learning communities in our faith journey over the next five years. Each of the five themes is enriched with connections to Scripture, song, prayer, and imagery.
“Do Justice,” the second of five pastoral themes, calls us to active engagement in creating a more just and compassionate world. Rooted in Catholic Social Teaching, it challenges us to uphold the dignity of every person by walking with both feet of social justice: Charity and Justice.
Charity responds to immediate needs through acts of compassion, service, and assistance. While essential, charity alone does not address the underlying causes of suffering and inequality.
Justice seeks lasting change by addressing the root causes of injustice, advocating for fair policies, and transforming systems that perpetuate inequity. This work requires both personal responsibility and collective action, often demanding courage, persistence, and solidarity.
As a faith community, we are called to learn about social issues, challenge our assumptions, stand with those who are marginalized, and work together to dismantle systems of oppression. Following Christ means moving beyond comfort and complacency to become agents of justice, mercy, and love in both word and action.
Logo: The "Do Justice" logo is represented by the image of The Two Feet of God's Love. Catholic disciples on mission are called to put Two Feet of God's Love into Action. This image illustrates the two distinct, but complementary, ways we can put the Gospel in action in response to God's love: justice (addressing systemic, root causes of problems that affect many people) and charity (short-term, emergency assistance for individuals).
The image of the feet also reminds us that this is a lifelong journey where we will need to continue to take steps forward each and every day. This journey is long and difficult, but it is not without celebration or hope. We must always remember that we do not walk alone on the journey and lean on God and our community of faith to lift us up when we are tired and frustrated.
Scripture Connection:
'Then the righteous will answer him and say, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? When did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? When did we see you ill or in prison, and visit you?' And the King will say to them in reply, 'Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.’ - Matthew 25:37-40
The Scripture passage that supports the theme comes from the Gospel of Matthew. The theme "Do Justice" calls us to remember that above all else we are called to love God, and to love our Neighbour. Our neighbours are not simply those that live near us or think or talk or look like us. Our neighbours extend to all of humanity. God loves each of us unconditionally and without exception. We have been carefully created in the image and likeness of God. By loving our Neighbour through the actions of charity and justice, we honour God and live out the call to discipleship that we are given through our Baptism. Just as Christ modelled special concern and love for those in need, we are called to "Do Justice."
